In California, the Daily 3 prize structure is a bit different to other versions of Pick 3. However, you still have to match the three winning numbers in exactly the correct order or in any order, depending on which playstyle you selected.
The biggest prize you can win is if you play a Straight and all three of your numbers are the same as the winning digits. If you play a Box, you win if all your numbers are drawn regardless of the order.
Unlike in other states, Daily 3 does not offer fixed prizes for each playstyle. Instead, the amounts are determined on a pari-mutuel basis, taking into account how many tickets are sold and the number of winners. This can result in the top prize for a Straight, for example, being higher than $500 on some occasions, or lower on others.
The table below shows all the playstyles and the odds of winning for each. They also show an estimated prize amount, and a share value.
Playstyle | Odds of Winning | Share Value | Estimated Prize |
---|---|---|---|
Straight | 1 in 1,000 | 12.5 | $500 |
Box - 2 like numbers (e.g. 778) | 1 in 333 | 2 | $160 |
Box - 3 different numbers (e.g. 123) | 1 in 167 | 4 | $80 |
Straight/Box - 2 like numbers (Straight portion) | 1 in 1,000 | 8.25 | $250 |
Straight/Box - 2 like numbers (Box portion) | 1 in 333 | 2 | $40 |
Straight/Box - 3 different numbers (Straight portion) | 1 in 1,000 | 7.25 | $250 |
Straight/Box - 3 different numbers (Box portion) | 1 in 167 | 1 | $20 |
The share value gives an indication of the proportion of the prize fund that goes to each playstyle. A calculation is taken after the number of winners has been determined for each draw. The number of winning selections in each prize category is multiplied by the relevant share value, then the results of the seven calculations are added together to produce the total shares for that draw. The available prize pool is then divided by the total shares won to work out the various prize amounts per share.
